Massa Marittima
Massa Marittima, considered one of the best preserved medieval villages in Italy, is just a half hour’s drive from Castiglione della Pescaia. Enclosed within its walls are buildings and narrow streets which open onto the wonderful central square with Saint Cerbonius Cathedral and the main buildings of the Medieval commune era. During the summer season a number of traditional events take place in the square, the best known of which is the Balestro del Girifalco, an ancient crossbow contest between the various neighbourhoods, with historical parade and flag-bearers.
